It has been a long held belief (misunderstanding) among most people that duplication and replication are the same thing. After all, to replicate and to duplicate are just a sophisticated way of saying “to copy” right? Well, technically replication and duplication do mean “copy”, but the words are not interchangeable. Both duplication and replication are processes that copy a master disc, but each process uses different methods and has their own advantages. At CDROM2GO, we believe it helps to be informed of the difference between the two so that you will know which process better fits your production needs.

Duplication
CD/DVD duplication involves taking pre-made CD or DVD recordable discs, such as a CD-R or DVD-R, and records them using a write laser.

This laser “burns” information directly onto the disc at speeds depending on the drive they are inserted into. After a couple minutes depending on size of information being copied and the speed of the drive, the discs are finished. When they are removed, they are identical copies of the master disc.

Duplication is great when you have low volume quantities, 5000 or less, or you are on a short time table and need discs within 5 days. Duplication also offers full color digital printing for those high quality prints.

Replication
The replication process is different than the duplication process in several ways.

Unlike duplication, replication does not require blank CD or DVD discs, but instead discs are created at the manufacturer with your information on them, or in other words, made from scratch. In order to do this, replication first requires that a glass master disc copy be made. Next, the glass master is used to create what is called a stamper, and it is this stamper that will help create the actual discs. The stamper is then placed inside in an injection-molding machine and plastic is injected to create a perfect copy.

Replications is the best choice for when you have high volume, 1000 discs or more, and have some time to spare. Replicated discs are printed using silkscreen or offset printing methods and most replication manufactures can auto assemble discs into CD jewel cases, paper sleeves, DVD cases, and cardboard sleeves, but other CD/DVD packaging choices are available.

Duplication towers are all over these days. They provide a great way to mass-produce a large quantity or small quantity of discs in a rather short period of time. However, it is difficult to decide which duplicator is right for your production needs. After all, DVD/CD duplicators come in all shapes, sizes, capacities, and brands. To add to the confusion, some duplicators are automated, while others are manual. So which one will you choose? Well I can’t make that decision for you, but I can provide you with some useful information that will aid in your decision of picking a duplicator.

The first thing you should decide when picking a duplicator is the capacity or size of the jobs you will be doing. Duplicators come with either one recording drive, and can go all the way up to a couple hundred recording drives. Understanding your production requirements can go a long way in saving you money as well as the hassle of picking the wrong duplicator. Next, it would be wise to choose whether you want a duplicator that just copies your information, or one that copies and prints. Depending on your production needs and who your intended clients are, a standard duplicator that only copies will be perfect for you. However, if you need custom printed discs, then I would highly recommend going with a publisher or publishing system.

Next depending on your production needs, I would determine if you want a manual or autoloading duplicator/publisher. Generally, manual duplication/publication tends to be faster than autoloading, which is great for mass-producing discs in a short period of time. However with manual duplicators, you have to spend your time feeding the duplicator. Unlike manual, autoloading duplicators/publishers do not require a person to manually feed them discs to operate. These duplicators/publishers are simple load-and-go machines that only require the user to load blank discs into the machine. The autoloading feature allows for the user to start the duplicator/publisher and return when it is done. Also each brand of autoloading duplicator/publisher has their own unique ways of loading their particular machines. Brands such as Primera use a robotic arm to manually pick up and place discs while brands like Microboards use a simple drop and feed mechanism that let gravity place the discs. Some of the major brands of duplicators are Primera, Epson, TEAC, Rimage, Microboards, and R-Quest.

Lastly it is recommended that you choose whether you want a standalone duplicator/publisher or if you want one that connects directly to a personal computer. Standalone duplicators/publishers are great if you do not have a PC or would prefer not to use a PC to run the equipment. Duplicators/publishers that require a PC are nice to have because some models have network capability; which allows the user to start up and copy/print on discs from another location at work or at home.

Whatever your production requirements, there is a right DVD/CD duplicator or DVD/CD publisher out there to fit your needs. Just remember when choosing a duplicator or publisher that you pick one that will fulfill your requirements because choosing the right one can determine if you have a pleasant copying experience or not.
